St Dennis Parish Council Road Safety Monitoring Report

Location: Trelavour Road (Pole 7)

Monitoring Period: 24 March 2026 – 19 May 2026

Overview

During this monitoring period, a mobile Speed Indicator Device (SID) was installed on Trelavour Road to record vehicle movements and speeds in both directions. This is a 20 mph road, so particular attention has been given to how many drivers are travelling at or below the speed limit. The data helps the Parish Council understand driver’s behaviour and identify any road safety concerns.

Traffic Volumes

A total of 61,886 vehicle movements were recorded during the monitoring period.

Incoming vehicles: 26,887

Outgoing vehicles: 34,999

Traffic is heavier in the outgoing direction, although both directions show steady and consistent use of the road.

Typical Speeds

Average speeds are close to the 20 mph limit:

Incoming average speed: 19.15 mph

Outgoing average speed: 21.66 mph

Incoming traffic:

50% of vehicles travel at 18 mph or below

85% of vehicles travel at 21 mph or below

Outgoing traffic:

50% of vehicles travel at 20 mph or below

85% of vehicles travel at 25 mph or below

Vehicles Travelling at or Below 20 mph

As this is a 20 mph road, it is encouraging to see that the majority of incoming vehicles are travelling at or below 20 mph, and around half of outgoing vehicles are travelling at or below this limit. Most remaining vehicles are only slightly above the limit. Overall, most drivers are complying with, or are very close to, the 20 mph speed limit.

Vehicles Travelling Above 20 mph

A proportion of vehicles, especially outbound, travel in the 20 to 25 mph range, with a smaller number travelling above 25 mph. Speeds above 30 mph appear to be relatively uncommon, indicating that while some drivers exceed the limit, most do so only marginally.

Highest Speeds Recorded

Incoming maximum speed: 45 mph

Outgoing maximum speed: 56 mph

These speeds are significantly above the limit but represent isolated incidents rather than typical behaviour.

Key Takeaways

61,886 total vehicle movements recorded

Majority of drivers are travelling at or below 20 mph, particularly inbound

Most other vehicles are travelling only slightly above the speed limit

A small minority exceed 30 mph

Highest recorded speed was 56 mph

Conclusion

The data shows that Trelavour Road is generally being used responsibly, with most drivers travelling at safe speeds appropriate for a 20 mph road. However, there is a tendency for some vehicles, particularly in the outbound direction, to travel slightly above the limit, and a very small number of significantly higher speeds were recorded. The Parish Council will continue to monitor traffic speeds, use SID data to inform road safety decisions, and work with partners where necessary to address any ongoing concerns.

Dog Fouling Campaign

The Parish Council is pleased to announce the launch of a new Dog Fouling Campaign across the village.

As part of the initiative, we will be installing six new dog waste bag dispensers in key locations around the village. If you’re out walking your dog and happen to forget your poo bags, help will now be close at hand!

We are currently looking for residents who would be happy to host a dispenser on the boundary of their property. The Parish Council will install the dispenser and supply the bags.

We will also be putting up Keep Britain Tidy “We Are Watching You” signs, which have proven highly effective in other areas, reducing dog fouling by up to 46% during trial schemes.

To help us target the worst affected areas, we would like residents to let us know where the main dog fouling hotspots are within the village.

We hope these initiatives will encourage all dog owners to help keep our village clean and pleasant for everyone.

Please contact the Parish Office if:

  • You would be willing to host a bag dispenser
  • You would like to suggest a location for a sign

Thank you for your support.
