Parish Council Road Safety Monitoring Report (Feb-May 2026)
Location: Post 10 - Robartes Road
Monitoring Period: 27 February 2026 – 1 May 2026
(Speed sign positioned to record inbound traffic, with data compared in both directions)
Overview
During this monitoring period, a vehicle-activated speed sign recorded traffic along Robartes Road. The data provides a clear picture of traffic volumes and driving speeds to support the Parish Council’s road safety work.
Traffic Volumes
• Incoming vehicles: 8,323
• Outgoing vehicles: 24,446
There is significantly more traffic leaving the area than entering at this monitoring point, but both directions provide useful insight into driver behaviour.
Typical Speeds
Incoming Traffic
• Average speed: 19.36 mph
• 50% of vehicles: 18 mph or below
• 85% of vehicles: 22 mph or below
Outgoing Traffic
• Average speed: 21.96 mph
• 50% of vehicles: 20 mph or below
• 85% of vehicles: 26 mph or below
Speeds are generally low in both directions, although outgoing traffic is slightly faster on average.
Vehicles Travelling Between 20 and 40 mph
Incoming traffic: Most vehicles fall between approximately 15 mph and 25 mph. A smaller proportion travel between 20 and 30 mph, with very few exceeding 30 mph.
Outgoing traffic: A larger proportion of vehicles fall within the 20–30 mph range. Some vehicles travel between 30 and 40 mph, but this remains a minority.
Overall, many vehicles (particularly outbound) travel between 20–30 mph, while those travelling between 30–40 mph are relatively few.
Highest Speeds Recorded
• Incoming traffic maximum speed: 45 mph
• Outgoing traffic maximum speed: 65 mph
While most drivers travel within safe limits, these figures show occasional instances of significant speeding.
Vehicles Travelling Over 40 mph
Incoming traffic: Very small number of vehicles exceeded 40 mph.
Outgoing traffic: A small minority exceeded 40 mph, with some higher extreme speeds observed.
Speeds above 40 mph are rare overall but more noticeable in outbound traffic.
Key Takeaways
• Over 32,000 total vehicle movements recorded
• Most drivers travel well below 30 mph
• Many vehicles fall within the 20–30 mph range
• A small minority exceed 40 mph, particularly outbound
• Highest recorded speed was 65 mph
Conclusion
Robartes Road is generally being used safely, with most drivers travelling at appropriate speeds. However, a small number of higher-speed vehicles—particularly in outbound traffic—highlight the need for continued monitoring and targeted safety measures. The Parish Council will continue rotating the mobile speed device across priority locations. Robartes Road will be monitored again to track trends over time and findings will be shared with Cornwall Highways and enforcement teams where appropriate
